Dutch Carnival and Valkenburg
Dutch Carnival is celebrated throughout Holland, but it is in the southern province of Limburg that the towns immerse themselves in one big party. The carnival dates back to medieval times and is held 40 days (excluding Sundays) before Easter.
4 Day Break – Itinerary
- Friday 12th February 2010– Local departure by coach then travel to Holland for three nights.
- Saturday 13th February 2010 – Carnival in Maastricht (included). There are several types of Carnival celebrated in The Netherlands. The best known is the Rijnlandsche Carnival which can be experienced in the province of Limburg. It shares many folklore traditions with its German counterparts. Maastricht is famous not so much for its parades but for its street carnival, with elaborate costumes that people work on all year – the emphasis is very much on humour B
- Sunday 14th Febraury 2010 – Aachen and Monschau (optional), Carnival in Valkenburg (included). We head into Germany to the city of Aachen where you have some free time. Later we continue to Monschau – a fairytale town with its cobbled streets lined with halftimbered houses and cosy cafés. We return to Valkenburg for all the fun of the Carnival, enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. B
- Monday 15th Febraury 2010 – Return to Calais, then home B
